Health Information Act and Related Publications
The following documents have been published by the Government of Alberta regarding the Health Information Act (HIA)

- HIA is the main body of legislation which governs the collection, use and disclosure of Albertans' personal health information.
- Alberta Electronic Health Record (EHR) Regulation: Establishes the rules, safeguards, and responsibilities for how custodians and certain authorized parties access and contribute health information to the provincial EHR (Alberta Netcare)
- Designation Regulation: Formally identifies which committees and boards are authorized to act as research ethics boards for health research in Alberta
- Health Information Regulation: Provides detailed rules that support the HIA by defining who qualifies as a custodian, what counts as registration information, and how health information should be collected, used, disclosed, and safeguarded
- Health Information Act Guidelines and Practices Manual: Resource that helps health care professionals understand how the HIA and related regulations impact them.
- Appendix 1 & 2 – Forms and Model letters
- Appendix 3 & 4 – Responsibilities and Components - Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) : Alberta’s private sector privacy law. Regulates how organizations collect, use, and disclose personal information in a way that balances an individual’s right to privacy with the reasonable needs of organizations to use personal information for legitimate purposes.
- Provincial Logging and Auditing Standard v. 2.0: Identifies legislated logging requirements and provides guidance for Alberta EHR auditing requirements
- Schedule of Communities Outside of Alberta Eligible for Alberta Electronic Health Record Access: The Schedule is the mechanism for designating eligible geographical communities. It specifies that Lloydminster, Saskatchewan, is the only community outside Alberta where health service providers are eligible for access to the Alberta EHR, subject to the regulation.
