Passwords

Security and privacy of health information within Alberta Netcare is paramount. A strong and secure password promotes patient security and privacy when accessing Alberta Netcare Electronic Health Record (EHR) information.

Before accessing Alberta Netcare, you require a unique User ID (user identifier) and Password. Your User ID establishes your identity; your Password validates that you are who you say you are. All Alberta Health (AH) applications and systems, including Alberta Netcare Portal (ANP), must meet the Alberta Netcare password standards.

Alberta Netcare Password Standards

All passwords must meet the following criteria, unless approved through the Security Policy Exception Process:

  1. Minimum length of 8 characters.
  2. Must include a combination of 3 of the following:
    • alpha-upper case (ABCDE)
    • alpha-lower case (fghij)
    • numeric (12345)
    • special characters (@#$%& -do not use underscore “_”)
  3. Must not contain your user name or full name.
  4. Will expire after 120 days.
  5. Cannot be reused for 13 iterations.
  6. A minimum of 5 invalid logins is allowed before being locked out. Call the Help Desk to reset your password.

Insecure passwords can be easily compromised – applying the Alberta Health password standard minimizes unauthorized access to patient data.

Password Security Tips

  • Avoid dictionary words, names of significant others (including pets) and personal information (such as your name, phone number or age).
  • Mix up letters, words and numbers.
  • Use a pass-phrase (use a line from a song and create a password using the first letter from each word).
  • Add character types (uppercase, lowercase, numbers and special characters @#$%^&*). Different types of characters strengthen the password.
  • Be careful to avoid using the same password for all your logins.
