Electronic Referral Solution (ERS)

What is Electronic Referral Solution (ERS)?
- reduce surgical wait times to clinically appropriate standards
- significantly decrease number of Albertans waiting for surgery
ERS is being developed in a phased approach that will add functionality, EMR vendors and additional specialties over time. When fully implemented, ERS will enable:
- Referring providers to submit referrals to specialty providers and track their status directly from their Electronic
Medical Record (EMR) or Clinical Information System (CIS)
- Specialty providers to receive, accept and return reports directly from their EMR/CIS
- Patients to have the ability to track the status of their referrals through their MyHealth Alberta Account
ERS is available to Healthquest users requesting surgical specialty referrals available through FAST (Facilitated Access to Specialized Treatment). Learn more about FAST.

What is the difference between eReferral and ERS?
ERS is the multi-system IT initiative designed to:
- reduce surgical wait times to clinically appropriate standards
- significantly decrease number of Albertans waiting for surgery
ERS is being developed in a phased approach that will add functionality, EMR vendors and additional specialties over time. When fully implemented, ERS will enable:
- Referring providers to submit referrals to specialty providers and track their status directly from their Electronic Medical Record (EMR) or Clinical Information System (CIS)
- Specialty providers to receive, accept and return reports directly from their EMR/CIS
- Patients to have the ability to track the status of their referrals through their MyHealth Alberta Account
How to Participate?
What is Community Information Integration (CII)
- It’s a technology that allows the submission of information, such as encounters and consults reports directly from an EMR to Netcare.
- You will need to use CII to participate in ERS to allow referral information sharing between your EMR and Netcare eReferral. Learn more about CII.
How does ERS work?
In this phase of the initiative:
• Information flows in one direction – EMR to eReferral
• Edits and updates to referrals must be submitted either via fax or direct entry into eReferral ( as per current clinic workflow)
• Clinics using Healthquest EMR are able to submit referrals electronically
